A new survey by Meraki Analytics suggests that social media has become the dominant source of news for many residents in Sierra Leone’s capital, reflecting a significant shift in how information is consumed across Freetown.

Data from the latest OneField Citizen Lens study, which surveyed 1,217 residents, shows that 54% of respondents rely on social media as their primary source of news and information. The findings point to the growing influence of digital platforms in shaping public conversations, opinions, and awareness of current affairs.

Despite the rise of online news consumption, traditional media continues to play an important role. The survey found that 23% of respondents still depend on radio, television, and newspapers as their main sources of information.

The study also revealed that 12% of residents do not engage regularly with news, highlighting a segment of the population that remains disconnected from daily information flows.

The findings come at a time when digital platforms are increasingly driving public engagement. From breaking news and political discussions to community issues and entertainment updates, social media is becoming the first point of contact for many citizens seeking information.

For media organisations, the results underscore the need to adapt to changing audience habits while maintaining professional standards of accuracy, verification, and public accountability. The growing dominance of digital platforms also raises broader questions about trust, misinformation, and the future of journalism in Sierra Leone.

Meraki Analytics says the survey is intended to spark conversations about how changing news consumption patterns are reshaping the country’s media ecosystem and influencing civic participation.

As more people turn to their phones before they turn on a radio or pick up a newspaper, Freetown’s media landscape is entering a new era—one that presents both opportunities and challenges for journalists, institutions, and citizens alike.
