According to the statement, SLCS became aware of a flyer making rounds on social media which purportedly claimed that Zainab Sheriff had died, described the claims as “fake news” and urged members of the public not to rely on or share the information.

The institution categorically rejected the claim and emphasized that Sheriff is alive.

“Such information is nothing other than Fake News, and must not be relied on in any way. Thus, Zainab Sheriff is reliably alive,” the statement reads.

Evidently, they disclosed that Zainab Sheriff recently complained of illness and was provided with medical attention in line with procedures applicable to inmates in custody.

Authorities further stated that she is currently recovering well.

According to SLCS, provision of healthcare and welfare services to inmates remains a core responsibility of the institution.

“Zainab Sheriff only complained of being sick and has been given the requisite medical attention like any other inmate in our custody, and she is recovering very well.”

The Correctional Service also used the opportunity to caution the public against spreading unverified information relating to inmates and correctional facilities.

Officials stressed that misinformation can create unnecessary panic, fuel speculation, and undermine public confidence in official institutions.

Moreover, journalists, bloggers, social media users, and members of the public are being advised to verify information through official channels before publication or circulation.
