Sierra Leone Roads Authority (SLRA) has announced the immediate closure of Brookfields Old Railway Line Bridge in Freetown, effective 1 August 2026, following an engineering assessment that identified serious structural deterioration.
The ecent inspections conducted by experts revealed significant damage to critical components of the bridge, raising concerns about continued safety for motorists, pedestrians, and other road users.
Consequently, authorities have taken the decision to shut down access as a precautionary measure aimed at protecting lives and property.
SLRA explained that this is not a routine traffic management exercise. Rather, it is a necessary safety intervention after findings indicated that the structure is no longer suitable for public use in its current condition.
Furthermore, access will remain restricted until rehabilitation or reconstruction works are completed and safety standards are fully restored.
Meanwhile, members of the public have been advised to comply with all traffic control measures and use designated alternative routes throughout the closure period.
In addition, traffic management arrangements will be coordinated by Sierra Leone Police, Sierra Leone Road Safety Authority, alongside other relevant agencies to minimise disruption and maintain the smooth flow of traffic within affected communities.
As a result, commuters and businesses that rely on this corridor may experience delays, particularly during peak hours. Nevertheless, road authorities maintain that public safety must remain a top priority.
While acknowledging inconvenience that may arise from this action, SLRA appealed for patience, understanding, and cooperation as efforts continue to restore this important transport link.
