President Dr. Julius Maada Bio has summoned an emergency sitting of Parliament to consider and approve a list of presidential nominees recently announced by State House.
To show that, Parliament has been formally recalled to reconvene on Thursday, 20th August 2026, at 10:00 a.m. in the Chamber of Parliament at Tower Hill, Freetown.
The notice states that the summons was issued on the direction of the President pursuant to Section 86(1) of the Constitution of Sierra Leone, 1991, which empowers the President to summon Parliament whenever necessary.
As it happens, the Clerk of Parliament informed Members of Parliament and the general public that the emergency sitting will focus on matters relating to the approval of presidential nominees, following recent appointments announced by State House.
The parliamentary recall comes shortly after President Bio unveiled a series of high-profile appointments and nominations affecting key sectors of government, including finance, foreign affairs, employment, energy, mining, revenue administration, public health, and diplomatic service.
Among the nominees awaiting parliamentary consideration are Karefa A. F. Kargbo for Minister of Finance, Mohamed Rahman Swarray for Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, and Umaru Napoleon Koroma for Minister of Employment, Labour and Social Security.
Several deputy ministerial appointments and senior public sector nominations are also expected to undergo parliamentary scrutiny during the sitting.
On the whole, the notice further advises all presidential nominees to complete the required parliamentary vetting procedures and make themselves available for consideration by Parliament on the scheduled date.
Members of Parliament have been urged to attend the sitting promptly and on time to facilitate the conduct of parliamentary business.
With Parliament set to reconvene under an emergency summons, attention will now turn to the vetting process and the debates that may emerge around the qualifications, experience, and suitability of nominees seeking parliamentary approval.
