Former President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma has returned to Sierra Leone to participate in the ongoing ECOWAS Summit of Heads of State and Government, following an invitation from the Chairman of the ECOWAS Authority, President Julius Maada Bio.
A photograph shared by the Ministry of Information and Civic Education showed the former President being warmly received by former Speaker of the ECOWAS Parliament, Hon. Sidie Mohamed Tunis, shortly after his arrival.
Dr. Koroma’s return comes just days after the Government, through the Office of the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, formally discontinued the criminal proceedings that had been instituted against him. The move, which was later endorsed by Parliament, has generated widespread public discussion and has been presented by authorities as part of broader efforts to promote national unity, reconciliation, and political cohesion.
His presence at the ECOWAS Summit places him among regional leaders, former leaders, diplomats, and distinguished guests gathered in Sierra Leone for one of the most significant political and diplomatic events hosted by the country in recent decades.
The development marks Dr. Koroma’s first major public appearance in Sierra Leone since leaving the country for medical treatment abroad, and comes at a time when conversations around reconciliation, political dialogue, and national cohesion continue to dominate public discourse.
As the ECOWAS Summit enters its final stages, the return of the former President is expected to attract significant public and political attention, given its timing and wider implications for the country’s evolving political landscape.
